A striking lithograph by Henri Matisse, featuring a seated female figure rendered in bold, expressive lines that prioritise form and rhythm.
This lithograph by Henri Matisse captures a seated female figure through a series of bold, economical lines. Matisse, a central figure in the development of twentieth-century art, often returned to the human form as a primary subject. In this work, he prioritises the expressive quality of the line over anatomical precision. The figure occupies a space defined by simplified patterns, suggesting a domestic interior without relying on traditional perspective or shading.
The composition is characterised by a stark contrast between the black ink and the cream-coloured paper. Matisse employs a calligraphic approach, where the weight of the stroke varies to define the contours of the body and the surrounding environment. The background features decorative elements that flatten the pictorial space, a technique common in his graphic works from this period. By reducing the image to its essential components, Matisse invites the viewer to focus on the rhythm and balance of the forms rather than a realistic depiction of the model.
This print reflects the artist's interest in the graphic potential of lithography, a medium he used to explore the relationship between positive and negative space. The signature HM in the lower corner confirms his authorship, while the loose, gestural quality of the drawing aligns with his broader experiments in the early 1900s. The work avoids unnecessary detail, opting instead for a directness that communicates the posture and presence of the subject through minimal visual information. It is a clear example of his ability to convey volume and character through a restricted palette and simplified mark-making.
