A late fifteenth-century drypoint engraving by the Master of the Amsterdam Cabinet, depicting the archangel Michael in combat with a dragon.
This drypoint engraving depicts the archangel Michael in the act of subduing a dragon, a subject common in late medieval religious art. The Master of the Amsterdam Cabinet, also known as the Master of the Housebook, is recognised for his distinct approach to the drypoint technique. Unlike traditional copperplate engraving, which relies on clean incisions, drypoint allows for a softer, more atmospheric quality due to the burr raised by the needle. This specific work demonstrates the artist's ability to render texture and movement within a compact composition.
The archangel is positioned centrally, his wings spread wide as he drives a long staff into the mouth of the beast beneath his feet. The dragon is rendered with grotesque features, contrasting with the serene, focused expression of Michael. Above, the heavens are represented by a sun-like face surrounded by clouds and smaller angelic figures, providing a sense of divine oversight. The drapery of Michael's robes is handled with fluid, rhythmic lines that suggest weight and motion, a hallmark of the artist's graphic style.
This print reflects the technical experimentation occurring in the Upper Rhine region during the late fifteenth century. The artist's use of light and shadow, achieved through varying the pressure of the needle, creates a sense of depth that was advanced for the period. The composition is balanced, with the verticality of the archangel countered by the sprawling form of the dragon. This piece offers a clear view into the stylistic preferences of the period, where the focus remained on narrative clarity and the expressive potential of the line. It is a representative example of the graphic output from a period when printmaking began to flourish as a medium for both devotional and artistic expression.
