A delicate drypoint engraving of Saint Catherine by the Master of the Amsterdam Cabinet, capturing the soft textures and expressive line work of the late fifteenth century.
This drypoint engraving depicts Saint Catherine of Alexandria, a figure frequently represented in late medieval art. The artist, known as the Master of the Amsterdam Cabinet or the Master of the Housebook, was a significant practitioner of the drypoint technique in the late fifteenth century. Unlike traditional copperplate engraving, which uses a burin to remove metal, drypoint involves scratching directly into the plate. This method creates a burr that holds ink, resulting in the soft, velvety lines visible in the saint's robes and the shading of the niche.
The composition is narrow and vertical, designed to fit within a shallow architectural space. Saint Catherine is shown with her traditional attributes: the spiked wheel, which refers to her martyrdom, and the sword. She wears a crown, signifying her royal status, and holds a palm branch, a symbol of victory over death. The figure stands with a gentle contrapposto, her gaze directed slightly downward, which provides a sense of quiet introspection. The cross-hatching in the upper corners of the niche adds depth to the background, pushing the figure forward.
The Master of the Amsterdam Cabinet is recognised for a fluid, sketch-like quality that distinguishes his work from the more rigid linear styles of his contemporaries. His ability to capture texture, from the metallic sheen of the sword to the soft folds of the fabric, demonstrates a high level of technical proficiency. This print reflects the devotional practices of the period, where small-scale images were used for private contemplation. The work remains a primary example of the transition toward more expressive and individualised forms of printmaking in the German-speaking regions during the late Gothic era.
