Descrizione
A detailed woodcut by Albrecht Altdorfer depicting Saint Christopher and the Infant Christ resting beneath a large tree.
This woodcut by Albrecht Altdorfer depicts Saint Christopher in a moment of repose, accompanied by the Infant Christ. Altdorfer, a member of the Danube School, is known for his integration of human figures into dense, atmospheric natural settings. In this composition, the figures are positioned at the base of a large, gnarled tree, which dominates the foreground. The artist employs a dense network of hatching and cross-hatching to define the textures of the bark, the foliage, and the drapery of the garments.
The background reveals a characteristic Altdorfer treatment of space, featuring a distant, mountainous horizon and a small architectural structure. The artist balances the monumental presence of the saint with the delicate rendering of the child, creating a quiet, contemplative scene. The woodcut medium allows for sharp, decisive lines that define the forms against the lighter areas of the paper. Altdorfer's monogram is visible on the trunk of the central tree, a common practice for the artist to mark his graphic works.
This print reflects the technical precision of early sixteenth-century German printmaking. The composition avoids excessive ornamentation, focusing instead on the relationship between the figures and their environment. The treatment of the trees and the distant terrain demonstrates the artist's interest in the natural world, a hallmark of his broader body of work. This piece offers a clear view into the stylistic concerns of the Danube School, where the environment often carries as much weight as the narrative subject itself. The print is a fine example of the period's mastery of the woodcut medium, showcasing the ability to convey depth and texture through black and white lines alone.

Artist Biography
Albrecht Altdorfer
He was born around 1480, probably in Regensburg, and became a citizen in 1505. He is credited with painting one of the first pure landscapes in oil with no human figures, Landscape with Footbridge (c. 1518 to 1520), a step that no European painter had taken since antiquity. He died in Regensburg in 1538.
