A fine etching by Albrecht Altdorfer depicting the Roman hero Mucius Scaevola, known for his stoic act of sacrifice in the face of the enemy.
This etching by Albrecht Altdorfer depicts the Roman hero Gaius Mucius Scaevola, who, according to legend, thrust his right hand into a sacrificial fire to demonstrate his resolve to the Etruscan king Lars Porsena. Altdorfer, a leading figure of the Danube School, presents the subject with a focus on the physical act of sacrifice. The composition centres on the altar, where the flames rise in swirling, energetic lines that contrast with the stoic posture of the protagonist.
The figure of Mucius Scaevola is rendered with the anatomical precision characteristic of early sixteenth-century German printmaking. His musculature is defined through dense hatching, which creates a sense of volume and weight. The background is filled with fine, parallel lines that suggest a turbulent atmosphere, drawing the viewer's eye toward the central action. The altar itself is decorated with classical motifs, reflecting the period's interest in antiquity and the revival of classical themes in Northern European art.
Altdorfer was one of the first artists to experiment with etching on iron plates, a technique that allowed for a more fluid, painterly line compared to the rigid requirements of copper engraving. This work demonstrates his ability to combine narrative drama with technical innovation. The print captures the tension of the moment, as the hero remains unmoved by the pain of the flames. The work is a fine example of the small-scale, highly detailed prints that circulated among humanists and collectors during the Renaissance. It provides a clear view into the artistic concerns of the Danube School, where the human figure is often integrated into a highly charged, expressive environment. The print remains a significant example of Altdorfer's graphic output, showcasing his mastery of line and his interest in classical heroism.
