A conceptual work by Tjebbe van Tijen, blending a stylised lakeside landscape with a dense, handwritten narrative integrated into the form of a swimmer.
Tjebbe van Tijen, a Dutch artist and systems designer, creates works that bridge the gap between visual art and textual narrative. This piece, titled Zwemmen in het lago maggiore, functions as a hybrid of drawing and stream-of-consciousness writing. The composition is divided into two distinct zones. The upper section features a stylised, colourful depiction of a lakeside town, rendered with flat planes of colour and simplified architectural forms. This area provides a sense of place, contrasting with the stark, monochromatic lower section.
In the lower portion, a large, outline-drawn figure is submerged within a dense field of handwritten Dutch text. The figure, depicted in a prone swimming position, acts as a vessel for the narrative. The text flows around and through the body, creating a texture that mimics the sensation of water or the internal monologue of the swimmer. The handwriting is deliberate, filling the negative space to form a cohesive, graphic block. The contrast between the vibrant, geometric landscape above and the raw, ink-heavy text below creates a tension between the external environment and the internal experience of the subject.
Van Tijen often explores themes of human interaction with technology and environment. Here, the act of swimming in Lake Maggiore becomes a meditative, almost overwhelming sensory experience. The text describes physical sensations, the movement of water, and the intrusion of urban thoughts into a natural setting. By integrating the written word directly into the anatomy of the figure, the artist forces the viewer to engage with the work as both an image to be seen and a document to be read. This approach reflects the artist's interest in information systems and the way human consciousness processes complex surroundings. The work remains a curious example of mid-twentieth-century conceptual practice, where the boundary between literature and visual art is intentionally blurred.
