Victor Vasarely is widely recognised as the father of Op Art. His work focuses on the manipulation of geometric forms and optical illusions to create a sense of movement on a two-dimensional surface. Zebra, created around 1937, is an early example of his experimentation with these concepts. The composition relies entirely on the interaction between black and white lines, which curve and distort to suggest the form of the animal without the use of traditional shading or contour lines.

In this piece, the background and the subject are unified through a continuous pattern of stripes. The zebra emerges from the field of lines through subtle shifts in the rhythm and curvature of the pattern.
