A refined woodblock print by Ryūgetsusai Shinkō, featuring a young woman with a birdcage from the Spring Rain Collection.
This woodblock print, titled Young Woman with a Birdcage, originates from the Spring Rain Collection (Harusame shū), volume two. Ryūgetsusai Shinkō, an artist active during the late eighteenth century, produced this work in the surimono format. Surimono were privately commissioned prints, often distributed among poetry circles or friends to mark special occasions. They are characterised by their high production quality, including the use of expensive pigments and refined paper.
The composition features a young woman in a kimono adorned with a repeating cherry blossom pattern. She holds a rectangular birdcage, a common motif in Edo-period art that often carries poetic associations with confinement or the fleeting nature of beauty. The figure is rendered with the slender proportions and graceful posture typical of the period. Her expression is calm, and her gaze is directed slightly away from the viewer, suggesting a moment of quiet contemplation.
Above the figure, the print includes calligraphic text. This is a hallmark of the surimono tradition, where the visual image and the written word function as a unified aesthetic experience. The poem provides context for the image, linking the visual subject to seasonal themes or literary references. The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft tones of blue, muted red, and the natural cream of the paper. The lines are fine and precise, demonstrating the skill of the carver and printer in translating the artist's original design into a finished woodblock print. This piece offers a glimpse into the sophisticated cultural life of the Edo period, where art, literature, and social exchange were closely linked.
