A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige II featuring a woman in a blue kimono standing before a flowering plum tree.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige II depicts a woman in a blue kimono standing before a blossoming plum tree. The composition follows the conventions of the Ukiyo-e school, where the figure is presented in a flattened space, prioritising decorative patterns and clear outlines over three-dimensional modelling. The woman wears a patterned kimono with a dark obi, her hair styled in a traditional fashion with hairpins. The plum branches extend across the upper portion of the print, providing a natural frame for the subject. A simple bamboo fence runs horizontally behind her, creating a sense of place while maintaining the graphic quality of the image.
Hiroshige II, a student of the famous Utagawa Hiroshige, continued the tradition of producing prints that captured both daily life and the natural world. This work demonstrates the technical skill required for multi-block printing, particularly in the application of colour and the registration of the fine lines. The blue background provides a cool contrast to the white blossoms and the warm tones of the woman's undergarment. The print reflects the aesthetic preferences of the late Edo period, where the depiction of fashionable figures in natural settings remained a popular subject for the urban public. The artist's signature and seal are visible in the lower left corner, typical of the period's publishing practices. This piece offers a view into the visual culture of nineteenth-century Japan, where the intersection of human activity and seasonal change provided a constant source of inspiration for printmakers.
