Gion Nankai, a scholar-official and poet, was a primary figure in the development of the Bunjinga (literati painting) tradition in Japan. This work demonstrates the characteristic economy of line and focus on atmospheric effect associated with the literati style. The subject of bamboo, a traditional symbol of resilience and moral integrity, is rendered with fluid, calligraphic brushwork that suggests the movement of stalks and leaves under the weight of rain.
The composition is balanced by a singular, textured rock formation at the base, which provides a visual anchor for the vertical stalks of bamboo.
