Urakami Gyokudō was a Japanese scholar-painter, musician, and poet who abandoned his official duties as a samurai to pursue a life of wandering and artistic expression. His work is defined by a highly personal, expressive use of ink that departs from the rigid conventions of the period. In this piece, the artist employs a distinctive technique involving dry, staccato brushstrokes that create a sense of atmospheric density. The composition captures a village scene partially obscured by rain, where the forms of trees and structures emerge from the mist through layered washes of ink.
Gyokudō often utilised a 'string-like' brushwork style, which is visible here in the skeletal rendering of the branches and the textured surfaces of the terrain. The painting reflects the Bunjinga tradition, which valued the subjective experience of the artist over technical precision. By focusing on the mood of the environment, Gyokudō conveys the damp, quiet stillness of a rainy day.
