A detailed seventeenth-century engraving by Renold Elstrack portraying the theologian William Perkins, complete with symbolic memento mori motifs.
This engraving by Renold Elstrack depicts William Perkins, a prominent English cleric and theologian associated with Christ's College, Cambridge. The portrait is executed in the formal, structured style characteristic of early seventeenth-century English printmaking. Perkins is shown within an oval frame, his gaze directed towards the viewer, with one hand resting upon an open book. This gesture reflects his identity as a scholar and writer of theological texts.
The surrounding frame incorporates symbolic elements common to the period. At the top, a skeleton holding an arrow and a figure representing Time or a scholar with an hourglass flank the central cartouche. These memento mori motifs serve as reminders of mortality, a frequent theme in the visual culture of the era. The Latin inscription encircling the portrait identifies the subject and notes his death in 1602. Below the portrait, a detailed biographical text provides context regarding his life, his birthplace in Marston, Warwickshire, and his prolific output as an author whose works were translated into multiple European languages.
Elstrack, one of the earliest native-born English engravers, utilised precise line work to define the textures of Perkins's ruff collar, his academic robes, and the architectural elements of the frame. The composition is balanced and symmetrical, typical of the commemorative portraiture produced for the burgeoning print market in London. The work was published by Compton Holland, a significant figure in the distribution of portrait prints during the reign of James I. This print offers a clear view into the intellectual and religious climate of Elizabethan and Jacobean England, capturing the gravity and scholarly focus of a man who exerted considerable influence over the theological debates of his time.
