A formal seventeenth-century engraving of the theologian Johannes Musaeus, featuring precise line work and traditional academic portrait elements.
This engraving by Andreas Matthäus Wolfgang depicts the theologian Johannes Musaeus (1613-1691). The composition follows the conventions of late seventeenth-century academic portraiture, presenting the subject within a formal oval frame. Musaeus is shown in a three-quarter view, wearing the traditional clerical attire of the period, including a plain white collar and a dark academic gown. His expression is composed, reflecting the gravity associated with his position as a professor at the University of Jena.
The print demonstrates the technical precision characteristic of Wolfgang, a member of a notable family of engravers based in Augsburg. The use of hatching and cross-hatching creates depth in the drapery of the clothing and models the facial features with clarity. The oval frame is inscribed with Latin text detailing the subject's identity and academic credentials. Below the portrait, a cartouche features a coat of arms incorporating a skull, a common memento mori motif in funerary and memorial portraiture of the era. This element serves to acknowledge the mortality of the subject while honouring his intellectual contributions.
The base of the print includes a Latin inscription, which provides further context regarding the commissioning of the work by the descendants of the Baier family. The clean lines and structured arrangement of the text and image reflect the formal requirements of scholarly portraiture during the Baroque period. This print provides a clear example of how printmaking was utilised to disseminate the likenesses of prominent intellectuals, ensuring their image remained accessible to a wider academic audience. The work is a representative example of the portrait engraving tradition in Germany, where the focus remained on the accurate depiction of the sitter combined with symbolic heraldic elements.
