A traditional Japanese ink wash painting on silk by Kanô Tsunenobu, depicting a waterfall within a mountainous setting.
This hanging scroll represents the stylistic conventions of the Kanô school during the Edo period. Kanô Tsunenobu, a member of the main line of the Kanô family, produced works that adhered to the rigorous training and aesthetic standards established by his predecessors. The composition follows the traditional vertical format, utilising negative space to suggest atmospheric depth and the vastness of the mountain environment.
The imagery features a cascading waterfall, a common motif in East Asian ink painting, which serves as a vertical axis for the composition. The brushwork demonstrates the controlled, calligraphic technique characteristic of the school, with varying ink tones used to define the craggy rock formations and the soft, mist-covered peaks in the distance. Small architectural elements are nestled near the base of the falls, providing a sense of scale and human presence within the natural setting. The use of light colour washes adds a subtle dimension to the foliage and the structure, distinguishing them from the monochrome ink of the surrounding terrain.
As a practitioner of the Kanô style, Tsunenobu balanced the demands of official patronage with the artistic traditions of the school.
