A traditional Bunjinga ink wash painting by Nakabayashi Chikutō, featuring a cascading waterfall and figures in a mountainous setting.
Nakabayashi Chikutō was a prominent figure in the Bunjinga, or literati, tradition of the Edo period. This hanging scroll demonstrates his mastery of ink wash techniques, which he refined through the study of Chinese masters. The composition follows a vertical format, common in traditional East Asian painting, guiding the viewer from the foreground figures upward toward the cascading waterfall.
The artist employs varying densities of ink to create a sense of atmospheric depth. The foreground features gnarled pine trees and rocky outcrops, rendered with precise brushwork that defines texture and form. As the eye travels upward, the ink becomes lighter, suggesting mist and distance. The waterfall itself is depicted with fluid, vertical strokes that convey the movement of water against the solid, static forms of the cliffs. Two small figures are positioned at the base of the scene, providing a sense of scale and inviting the viewer to contemplate the vastness of the natural environment.
Chikutō was known for his theoretical writings on painting, and this work reflects his adherence to the principles of the Southern School of Chinese painting. He prioritised the expression of the artist's inner state over strict realism. The monochromatic palette relies on the subtle interplay of black, grey, and the natural tone of the silk support. This approach creates a balanced visual experience, focusing on the rhythm of the brush and the composition of space. The work remains a representative example of the scholarly aesthetic that defined the Bunjinga movement, where the act of painting was considered a form of intellectual and spiritual cultivation.
