A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Shōtei Hokuju, featuring the Kanda River and Mount Fuji with distinct Western-influenced perspective.
Shōtei Hokuju was a student of the master Katsushika Hokusai, and this woodblock print demonstrates his interest in Western-influenced perspective. The composition depicts the Ochanomizu area of Edo, now Tokyo, with the Kanda River flowing through a deep ravine. The steep, angular cliffs on the right side of the image are rendered with geometric precision, a stylistic choice that separates Hokuju from many of his contemporaries who favoured more organic, rounded forms.
In the distance, the iconic silhouette of Mount Fuji rises above the horizon, providing a sense of scale and geographic context. The foreground features a winding river with small boats, while the upper bank shows a path populated by tiny figures, suggesting the daily activity of the city. The colour palette is restrained, relying on muted greens, earthy browns, and soft blues to convey the atmosphere of the scene. The print reflects the transition in Japanese art during the early nineteenth century, as artists began to experiment with depth and spatial construction.
Hokuju's work is often noted for its technical rigour and its departure from the more decorative tendencies of the Ukiyo-e school. By focusing on the structural elements of the terrain, he creates a sense of physical presence. The print captures a specific moment in the history of Edo, documenting the topography of the city before the extensive urbanisation of the later periods.
