Beschreibung
A serene rural scene by Henri Rousseau, featuring a row of houses and a distant village rendered in his signature Naïve style.
Henri Rousseau, a self-taught painter often associated with the Naïve art movement, produced this rural scene during the later years of his career. The composition displays the characteristic stylistic traits that defined his approach: a rejection of traditional academic perspective in favour of a flattened, almost stage-like arrangement of elements. The scene depicts a row of houses in the foreground, set against a dense cluster of trees, with a distant village and church spire visible on the horizon.
Rousseau applies paint with a deliberate, methodical quality. The trees are rendered with individualised, almost graphic attention to their foliage, while the architecture is simplified into clean, geometric forms. The sky is a uniform, muted grey, which creates a quiet atmosphere and allows the earthy tones of the vegetation and the white facades of the buildings to remain the primary focus. Unlike the complex, exotic jungle scenes for which he is often recognised, this work demonstrates his interest in the suburban outskirts of Paris, specifically the area of Malakoff where he lived.
The artist's signature is visible in the lower left corner, applied with the same directness found throughout the canvas. His work frequently drew criticism from contemporary observers for its lack of technical polish, yet it gained admiration from avant-garde artists who valued his sincerity and unique visual language. This print captures the specific texture of his brushwork and the subtle colour relationships that define his suburban observations. It provides a clear example of how Rousseau translated the mundane reality of his surroundings into a personal, dreamlike vision, free from the constraints of formal training.

Artist Biography
Henri Rousseau
Nicknamed Le Douanier (“the Customs Officer”) due to his job on the outskirts of Paris, Rousseau only began painting seriously at age 40 and retired nine years later to pursue art full time. Though he never left France, his exotic landscapes—lush with oversized foliage and wild animals—were inspired by visits to botanical gardens, illustrated books, and stories from soldiers who had served abroad.
Rousseau believed himself to be a great realist, proudly comparing himself to Picasso. He also pioneered the "portrait landscape" genre, blending figures into rich natural backdrops. Once mocked, Rousseau is now celebrated as a visionary outsider whose work continues to inspire, including references in modern pop culture such as the film Madagascar.
