Juan Gris, born José Victoriano González-Pérez, was a central figure in the development of Synthetic Cubism. This work, dated 1921, demonstrates his rigorous approach to composition and his interest in the interplay between objects and their environment. Unlike the fragmented, multi-perspective works of his earlier career, this piece employs a more structured, architectural arrangement of forms.

The composition centres on a tabletop arrangement featuring a guitar, a vessel, and a newspaper fragment bearing the text 'LEPET'. These objects are positioned against a backdrop that suggests a view of a bay, framed by a window or door structure. Gris uses a controlled palette of blues, ochres, and blacks to define the spatial relationships between the foreground items and the distant horizon.
