Albert Gleizes was a central figure in the development of Cubism, both as a practitioner and a theorist. Alongside Jean Metzinger, he authored the seminal text 'Du Cubisme' in 1912, which helped define the movement for a wider audience. This work, 'Femme Cubiste', demonstrates his approach to the fragmentation of the human form, a hallmark of his mature style.

The composition is constructed through a series of interlocking geometric planes. Rather than attempting to replicate the physical reality of a sitter, Gleizes prioritises the structural logic of the canvas. The figure is deconstructed into angular shapes, with the head and torso suggested through shifts in colour and orientation.
