A charming nineteenth-century educational alphabet print featuring hand-coloured woodcut illustrations and Dutch verses for letters N through Z.
This print is a page from an educational alphabet book, specifically the latter half covering the letters N through Z. Produced by the Belgian firm Glenisson & Zonen, it belongs to the tradition of popular prints intended for children. Each letter is paired with a woodcut illustration and a short Dutch verse, providing a visual and textual aid for early literacy.
The aesthetic is characteristic of mid-nineteenth-century mass-produced ephemera. The woodcut lines are bold and direct, designed for clarity rather than fine detail. The hand-applied colour is applied in a loose, somewhat imprecise manner, typical of the rapid production methods used for such affordable publications. The imagery ranges from domestic animals and objects, such as the ox (Os) and the well (Put), to more abstract concepts like the square (Quadraat) and the letter X itself, which is depicted as a man carrying a large pole.
These prints were often sold as loose sheets or in small booklets, serving as a primary source of visual culture for children of the period. The inclusion of moralising or descriptive verses reflects the pedagogical approach of the time, where learning the alphabet was integrated with observations of the natural and social world. The survival of such sheets is relatively rare, as they were frequently handled, cut, or discarded by their young owners. This particular example offers a glimpse into the graphic design and educational tools of the nineteenth-century Low Countries, capturing a specific moment in the history of children's literature and print production.
