A nineteenth-century Dutch woodcut featuring twelve panels of children's games, each accompanied by a moralising verse.
This print, titled 'Hier vind gij jeugd naar uw begeeren, het kinderspel', is a characteristic example of nineteenth-century Dutch popular imagery. Produced by Theodorus Johannes Wijnhoven-Hendriksen, the work functions as a moralising educational tool for children. The composition is divided into twelve distinct panels, each depicting a different recreational activity, such as spinning a top, ice skating, archery, and flying a kite. Beneath each illustration, a short verse in Dutch provides a lesson, connecting the physical act of play to the development of character and social duty.
The visual style is straightforward and functional, typical of mass-produced woodcuts intended for wide distribution among the public. The lines are bold and clear, designed to be easily legible when printed on inexpensive paper. The hand-applied colour, using limited washes of red and green, adds a decorative quality to the otherwise monochrome print. This technique was common in the production of broadsides and children's sheets during the period, where speed and affordability were primary concerns for the publisher.
Beyond the depiction of games, the print offers a glimpse into the social values of the era. The text encourages children to view their play as a preparation for adult responsibilities, suggesting that discipline and focus are required even in leisure. The inclusion of 'No. 23' at the top right indicates that this piece was part of a larger series, likely sold as a collection of instructive prints. The work remains a valuable record of historical childhood pastimes and the pedagogical methods employed in the Netherlands during the mid-nineteenth century.
