A geometric abstraction by Swiss artist Max Bill, featuring a diamond-shaped composition of precise, overlapping colour bands.
Max Bill, a central figure in the development of Concrete Art, produced this work in 1973. The composition adheres to the principles of mathematical precision and objective clarity that defined his career. Bill, who studied at the Bauhaus in Dessau, maintained a rigorous approach to form and colour throughout his life. His work avoids subjective expression, focusing instead on the internal logic of geometric relationships.
The painting is structured within a diamond format, a shape Bill frequently employed to disrupt traditional horizontal and vertical orientations. The central area is dominated by a deep, dark tone, which the title refers to as 'caput mortuum', a historical pigment name for a brownish-purple iron oxide. This central mass is surrounded by a series of concentric, overlapping geometric bands. These bands transition through a spectrum of reds, oranges, and purples, culminating in cooler blue triangles at the top and bottom vertices.
The arrangement creates a sense of compression and expansion, as the colours appear to recede or advance based on their hue and placement. By using flat, unmodulated fields of colour, Bill eliminates the illusion of depth, forcing the viewer to engage with the surface as a purely physical object. The work demonstrates his interest in the interaction of colour and the mathematical division of space. It is a study in how simple geometric elements can generate complex visual tension without relying on representational imagery. The precision of the edges and the calculated balance of the colour transitions reflect his background in architecture and industrial design, where function and form are inextricably linked. This print captures the exactitude of the original oil painting, preserving the clarity of the geometric boundaries and the specific tonal qualities of the colour palette.
