A detailed study of a 12th-13th century glazed earthenware jar, showcasing the weathered turquoise finish and relief-moulded shoulder decoration.
This fine art print captures a piece of historical ceramic craftsmanship, specifically an earthenware jar dating to the 12th or 13th century. The vessel exhibits the characteristic aesthetic of medieval Islamic pottery, where functional forms were often elevated through the application of alkaline glazes. The body of the jar features a globular shape, tapering towards a narrow base, which is typical of storage vessels from this period and region.
The surface treatment is defined by a partial turquoise glaze that has weathered over centuries, resulting in a craquelure effect across the body. This degradation of the glaze reveals the underlying clay body, providing a contrast between the muted, earthy tones of the ceramic and the remnants of the once-brilliant blue-green finish. Around the shoulder of the vessel, there is a band of relief decoration. This ornamentation consists of repeating geometric or calligraphic motifs, which were pressed into the clay before firing. These patterns provide a rhythmic quality to the upper portion of the jar, balancing the smooth, unadorned lower section.
Such objects were produced in large quantities for domestic use, yet they demonstrate the technical skill of potters who managed the firing process to achieve these specific glaze colours. The print preserves the texture of the aged surface, including the subtle variations in the glaze thickness and the signs of wear accumulated over time. It serves as a study of form and material history, documenting the intersection of utility and decorative tradition in medieval craft. The neutral background of the print allows the viewer to focus on the silhouette and the tactile qualities of the earthenware, making it a suitable addition for those interested in the history of material culture and ancient decorative arts.
