A detailed study of a fluted celadon ewer featuring a gold lacquer repair, capturing the subtle textures of historical stoneware.
This image depicts a small ewer, a vessel traditionally used for pouring liquids. The form is defined by vertical fluting, which gives the body a lobed, melon-like appearance. The surface is covered in a characteristic celadon glaze, a pale green finish achieved through the reduction firing of iron-rich clay. The glaze displays a fine network of crackle, a common feature in historical stoneware where the cooling process causes the glass-like coating to contract at a different rate than the clay body.
The spout of the vessel features a distinct metallic repair, likely gold lacquer. This technique, often associated with the Japanese practice of kintsugi, involves mending broken pottery with lacquer mixed with powdered gold. Such repairs do not hide the damage but instead acknowledge the history of the object, treating the break as part of its narrative. The handle is simple and arched, providing a functional contrast to the rounded, organic shape of the body.
Celadon wares were highly prized for their subtle colour and smooth texture, often mimicking the appearance of jade. The simplicity of the form suggests a focus on the material qualities of the glaze and the precision of the potting. This print captures the soft, diffused light reflecting off the glazed surface, showing the variations in tone from the pale sea-foam green to the darker, iron-stained crevices. The neutral background ensures the focus remains on the physical presence of the vessel, allowing for a clear view of the texture and the specific details of the repair work.
