A masterful example of Ming Dynasty ink wash painting, featuring expressive brushwork and the classic pairing of bamboo and rock.
This work by Xu Wei exemplifies the expressive potential of the xieyi, or sketching ideas, style of the late Ming Dynasty. Xu Wei is recognised for his departure from the rigid academic standards of his era, favouring a spontaneous and highly personal approach to ink application. In this composition, the artist employs rapid, wet brushwork to define the rugged form of a rock, contrasted against the delicate, rhythmic strokes that delineate bamboo stalks and foliage.
The ink tonality ranges from deep, saturated blacks to diluted grey washes, creating a sense of atmospheric depth without relying on traditional perspective. The composition is balanced by a vertical column of calligraphy on the right, which integrates text and image into a unified aesthetic experience. This practice was central to the literati tradition, where the artist's internal state and intellectual cultivation were considered as important as the visual subject matter.
Xu Wei's technique involves a high degree of gestural freedom. The brushstrokes are not merely descriptive but serve as a record of the artist's physical movement and emotional intensity. The bamboo, a traditional symbol of resilience and moral integrity, is rendered with a fluidity that suggests movement in the wind. The rock, by contrast, is formed through heavy, layered washes that suggest mass and permanence. This juxtaposition of the ephemeral and the solid is a recurring theme in Xu Wei's oeuvre. The work remains a primary example of how ink wash painting can convey complex psychological states through minimal means. It invites the viewer to observe the interplay between the void and the filled space, a concept fundamental to Chinese aesthetic philosophy.
