A traditional Chinese ink wash painting by Zheng Xie, featuring bamboo and rock with integrated calligraphy.
Zheng Xie, also known as Zheng Banqiao, is a primary figure of the Eight Eccentrics of Yangzhou. This ink wash painting depicts bamboo stalks alongside a weathered rock, a subject that held personal and philosophical significance for the artist. The bamboo, rendered with sharp, decisive brushwork, contrasts with the softer, more diffused ink application used to define the rock formation behind it.
The composition follows traditional literati painting conventions, where the artist integrates calligraphy directly into the pictorial space. The vertical columns of text on the right side balance the visual weight of the bamboo on the left. Zheng Xie was known for his unconventional approach to brushwork, often blending different calligraphic styles into his painting technique. His work avoids excessive ornamentation, focusing instead on the expressive potential of ink density and the rhythm of the brush stroke.
In this piece, the bamboo leaves are executed with varying degrees of pressure, creating a sense of movement as if caught in a light breeze. The rock serves as a grounding element, its texture suggested through subtle washes rather than rigid outlines. This approach reflects the artist's interest in capturing the spirit of the subject rather than its literal appearance. The negative space surrounding the bamboo and rock allows the viewer to focus on the interplay between the solid, dark ink of the foliage and the lighter, atmospheric treatment of the background. This print preserves the tonal range of the original ink, capturing the nuances of the brushwork and the texture of the paper.
