These two etchings by Daniel Nikolaus Chodowiecki depict dramatic scenes from Samuel Richardson's epistolary novel, 'Clarissa'. Chodowiecki, a prolific illustrator based in Berlin, produced these plates for a German edition of the work. The left panel shows the titular character, Clarissa, on her deathbed, surrounded by figures in a sombre, domestic interior. The right panel captures the chaotic and harrowing scene of the death of Sinclair, a brothel keeper, illustrating the moral gravity often associated with Richardson's narrative.
Chodowiecki employs a precise, linear style characteristic of eighteenth-century book illustration. His work focuses on the theatricality of the human figure and the arrangement of interior space to convey emotional weight.
