This hanging scroll, attributed to Unkoku Tōetsu, displays the characteristic economy of line associated with the Unkoku school of painting. The artist, a member of the lineage founded by Unkoku Tōgan, worked within the tradition of ink wash painting that drew inspiration from the earlier Muromachi period masters, particularly Sesshū Tōyō. The composition focuses on two horses rendered in a minimalist style, where the artist uses varying densities of ink to suggest volume and texture without relying on heavy outlines.
The horses are depicted with calligraphic brushwork, capturing their forms through swift, decisive strokes. The mane and tail of each animal are suggested through layered washes, creating a sense of movement and softness against the stark, unadorned paper background. The negative space surrounding the figures is intentional, a hallmark of Japanese ink painting that invites the viewer to focus on the essential form of the subjects. The artist avoids unnecessary detail, preferring to communicate the spirit of the animals through posture and the rhythm of the ink application.
Unkoku Tōetsu was active during the early Edo period, a time when the Unkoku school maintained its reputation for technical precision and adherence to classical ink traditions. This work reflects the school's focus on monochrome aesthetics, where the interplay between light and dark ink tones replaces the need for colour. The subtle variations in the ink, from deep black to diluted grey, provide depth to the horses' bodies. This piece is an example of the refined, disciplined approach to animal portraiture that defined the period, prioritising the capture of movement and character through minimal means.
