Kano Tan’yū, a central figure of the Kano school during the early Edo period, produced this work using the traditional sumi-e technique. The composition relies on the economy of the brush, where minimal ink strokes suggest the atmospheric conditions of a sudden rain shower. A lone figure, sheltered by an umbrella, traverses the space, while the surrounding environment is rendered through soft, blurred washes of ink that evoke the dampness of the air.
The artist employs a technique known as haboku, or splashed ink, to create the dark, looming forms in the upper left corner. These shapes imply a heavy cloud or a distant cliff face, providing a sense of scale and depth without explicit detail. The figure is sketched with quick, decisive lines, capturing movement and the urgency of seeking cover. The negative space, or ma, is used to represent the falling rain and the mist, allowing the viewer to complete the scene through suggestion rather than literal depiction.
Tan’yū was known for his ability to adapt the formal styles of his predecessors into a more personal, abbreviated manner. This work reflects his mastery of ink control, balancing the density of the pigment against the absorbent quality of the silk. The muted palette of greys and blacks creates a quiet, contemplative mood. It is a characteristic example of the literati-influenced aesthetic that gained traction among the samurai class and urban elite during the seventeenth century. The work avoids unnecessary ornamentation, focusing instead on the relationship between the human subject and the natural elements. By stripping away extraneous detail, the artist directs attention to the immediate experience of the weather, demonstrating the technical precision required for this style of ink painting.
