A geometric screenprint by Sol LeWitt featuring rhythmic, undulating bands of colour contained within a square frame.
Sol LeWitt, a primary figure in the development of Conceptual art and Minimalism, produced this screenprint as part of his later investigations into geometric systems and colour theory. The work is defined by a series of parallel, undulating bands that traverse the square frame. LeWitt often utilised a set of predetermined rules to dictate the execution of his art, prioritising the underlying logic of the composition over the manual labour of the artist. By removing the subjective hand of the creator, he allowed the mathematical structure of the wavy lines to dictate the visual outcome.
The composition relies on the repetition of these bands, which shift in hue across the surface. The colour palette is applied with a consistent density, creating a rhythmic visual experience that avoids traditional perspective or depth. The bands appear to flow from one edge of the square to another, constrained by a thick, dark border that anchors the movement within the print. This approach reflects LeWitt's interest in the serial nature of art, where the variation of a single element—in this case, the colour and the wave—generates a complex visual field.
LeWitt's work from this period often moved away from the stark white structures of his early career, embracing a wider spectrum of colour. The screenprint medium allows for flat, uniform application of ink, which suits the precise, non-representational nature of his designs. The result is a work that functions as a study in order and variation. It invites the viewer to observe the interaction of colour and form without the distraction of narrative or symbolic content. The print remains a clear example of his systematic approach to art-making, where the concept is the primary driver of the final aesthetic result.
