A geometric abstraction from Hilma af Klint's 1914-1915 series, exploring themes of duality and spiritual transformation through concentric circles.
The Swan (No. 16) is part of a series of twenty-four paintings produced by Hilma af Klint between 1914 and 1915. This body of work explores the concept of duality, transformation, and the reconciliation of opposites. Af Klint, a Swedish artist whose work remained largely unseen by the public for decades, developed a visual language rooted in her interest in spiritualism and theosophy. She sought to map invisible forces and the evolution of human consciousness through colour and form.
In this specific composition, the artist employs a circular motif set against a stark black background. The circle is divided vertically, with the left side featuring concentric rings of colour, while the right side remains a uniform, pale tone. The use of a central red core, surrounded by blue and lighter hues, suggests a progression or a layering of energy. The geometric precision of the work contrasts with the soft, painterly application of the pigment. By reducing the swan, a symbol often associated with purity and spiritual transition, to these essential shapes, af Klint moves away from representational art toward a symbolic abstraction.
This piece reflects the artist's systematic approach to her spiritual investigations. She did not intend for these works to be viewed as mere decorative objects, but rather as diagrams of a higher reality. The balance between the dark void of the background and the luminous, structured circle creates a tension that invites contemplation. The work remains a significant example of early twentieth-century abstraction, demonstrating an approach to non-objective painting that developed independently of the mainstream European avant-garde movements of the period.
