A detailed late fifteenth-century Netherlandish painting depicting a military siege alongside a church interior.
The Siege of Rhenen is a notable example of late fifteenth-century Netherlandish painting. Attributed to the anonymous Master of Rhenen, the work depicts a military conflict with a distinct narrative approach. The composition organises the scene into multiple zones, allowing the viewer to observe the chaos of the assault alongside the relative calm of the interior space within the church.
On the left, soldiers in period attire approach the fortified walls of the town. The architecture is rendered with attention to the defensive structures of the era, including crenellated walls and towers. The artist employs a high viewpoint, which provides a clear survey of the tactical movements occurring outside the gates. In the foreground, figures are shown in various states of action, from those actively engaged in the siege to a fallen soldier, which adds a sense of immediacy to the historical event.
To the right, the scene shifts to the interior of a large church. This section provides a contrast to the violence outside, showing figures in prayer or contemplation. The architectural rendering of the church, with its tall windows and vaulted ceiling, demonstrates the technical skill of the period in representing spatial depth.
