It depicts the story of the corrupt judge Sisamnes, who accepted a bribe and was subsequently punished by King Cambyses of Persia. This panel shows the arrest of Sisamnes, while the companion piece illustrates his flaying. Gerard David, a master of the Early Netherlandish tradition, employs a precise, observational approach to the figures and the architectural setting.
