A traditional Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Kitao Shigemasa depicting the Seven Gods of Good Fortune aboard the mythical Treasure Ship.
This woodblock print by Kitao Shigemasa depicts the Takarabune, or Treasure Ship, a vessel traditionally associated with the Seven Gods of Good Fortune in Japanese folklore. The composition gathers the deities together upon a boat adorned with a dragon head, navigating through stylised waves. The figures are rendered with the characteristic line work of the mid-Edo period, reflecting the artist's focus on clarity and narrative detail.
Kitao Shigemasa was a prominent figure in the Ukiyo-e school, known for his contributions to book illustration and print design. His work often features balanced compositions and a refined approach to figure drawing. In this print, the deities are arranged to occupy the space of the boat, with each figure identifiable by their traditional attributes. The inclusion of the dragon-headed prow and the crane flying overhead adds layers of auspicious symbolism common to the period. The palette remains restrained, relying on earth tones and muted reds to define the forms against the paper ground.
As a practitioner of the Ukiyo-e style, Shigemasa utilised the woodblock medium to produce works that were accessible to the urban population of Edo. This print demonstrates the technical precision required to carve and register multiple blocks for a single image. The lines are thin and controlled, allowing for the expression of facial features and the folds of garments. The work provides insight into the popular iconography of the time, where mythological subjects were frequently adapted into visual narratives for entertainment and cultural education. The print is a representative example of the genre, showing the integration of human figures with symbolic creatures within a maritime setting.
