Beschreibung
A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige, featuring a unique perspective of the Nihonbashi and Edobashi bridges in Edo.
This woodblock print is part of the series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, a collection produced by Utagawa Hiroshige during the final years of his career. The composition employs a distinctive framing device, placing the massive, close-up wooden post of the Nihonbashi Bridge in the foreground. This choice forces the viewer to look past the structure toward the Edobashi Bridge in the distance. The perspective creates a sense of depth, contrasting the immediate, tactile reality of the bridge timbers with the atmospheric horizon.
In the lower right corner, a wooden bucket containing fish rests on the bridge, a detail that introduces a narrative element of daily commerce in Edo. The sky transitions from a deep indigo at the top to a pale, warm glow near the horizon, a technique known as bokashi, which demonstrates the technical skill of the carvers and printers involved in the production of these works. The buildings along the canal are rendered with precision, showing the dense urban development of the period. The water below reflects the activity of the boats, adding movement to the scene.
Hiroshige was a master of the landscape genre within the Ukiyo-e tradition. His work often focused on the intersection of human activity and the natural environment. By choosing unusual angles and foreground obstructions, he moved away from traditional, static depictions of famous sites. This print captures the bustling energy of the capital, presenting a view that is both specific to its location and evocative of the broader atmosphere of mid-nineteenth-century Japan. The print remains a primary example of the aesthetic priorities of the Edo period, where the beauty of the everyday was elevated through the medium of the woodblock print.
