An intricate 1558 engraving by Pieter Bruegel the Elder, depicting the allegorical representation of Anger through a chaotic scene of conflict and moral decay.
This engraving, titled Ira (Anger), forms part of a series depicting the Seven Deadly Sins, designed by Pieter Bruegel the Elder and published by Hieronymus Cock in 1558. The work presents a chaotic, nightmarish vision of human conflict, rendered with the meticulous detail characteristic of Bruegel’s graphic output.
At the centre, a large, grotesque figure representing Anger sits atop a barrel, holding a flask, while surrounding scenes depict various forms of violence and discord. Soldiers engage in combat, figures are dismembered, and buildings burn in the background, creating a sense of pervasive disorder. The composition is crowded with hybrid creatures, armed men, and suffering figures, all contributing to a narrative of moral decay. Bruegel employs a high-angle perspective, allowing the viewer to survey the entire scene of destruction.
The print is inscribed with Latin and Dutch text at the bottom, which serves to moralise the imagery, warning of the physical and spiritual consequences of succumbing to wrath. The visual language draws heavily upon the tradition of Hieronymus Bosch, utilising monstrous forms and surreal elements to externalise internal vices. The fine, precise lines of the engraving capture the textures of armour, flesh, and smoke, demonstrating the technical skill involved in translating Bruegel’s original drawings into reproducible prints. This work offers a window into the sixteenth-century preoccupation with moral instruction and the depiction of human folly, presented through a lens of dark, satirical observation. It remains a significant example of the print culture that circulated throughout Europe during the Renaissance, disseminating complex allegorical themes to a wider audience.
