A contemplative interior scene by Henri Matisse, depicting an artist at work alongside a student in a studio setting.
The Painting Lesson, executed in 1919, captures a quiet moment within the studio of Henri Matisse. The composition is divided between the artist, seen from behind as he works at an easel, and a seated figure, likely his daughter Marguerite, who studies a book at a table. The space is defined by a stark black background, which pushes the subjects forward and flattens the pictorial plane.
Matisse employs a restrained palette, relying on the contrast between the deep black void, the white tablecloth, and the warm ochre of the easel. The oval mirror, positioned centrally, reflects a view of the outdoors, introducing a secondary space that complicates the interior perspective. The flowers and fruit on the table provide small bursts of colour, yet they remain secondary to the structural arrangement of the figures.
This work reflects the artist's shift toward a more disciplined, classical approach during his time in Nice. The brushwork is deliberate, focusing on the geometry of the scene rather than the expressive, non-naturalistic colour associated with his earlier Fauvist period. The figure of the student, head bowed in concentration, mirrors the focused activity of the painter, creating a dialogue between the act of creation and the act of observation. The inclusion of the mirror is a recurring device in his work, used here to bridge the gap between the interior studio environment and the world beyond. The painting remains a study in balance, spatial ambiguity, and the quiet rigour of the artistic process.
