Painted in 1866, The Origin of the World is a work by the French Realist painter Gustave Courbet. The composition focuses on the torso and thighs of a reclining woman, with the head and lower legs cropped from the frame. The artist employs a palette of muted flesh tones, contrasted against the dark, textured rendering of the subject's pubic hair and the white drapery that frames the figure.
Courbet was a central figure in the Realist movement, which rejected the idealised subjects common in the academic art of the nineteenth century. This painting, commissioned by the Turkish-Egyptian diplomat Khalil-Bey, remained in private collections for over a century. It was not exhibited publicly until 1988, when it entered the collection of the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
