A striking Meiji-era woodblock triptych by Utagawa Kunisada III depicting a theatrical scene inspired by the 1879 visit of Ulysses S. Grant to Japan.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Kunisada III, also known as Kunimasa IV, captures a moment from the theatrical adaptation of the life of Ulysses S. Grant. Following Grant's visit to Japan in 1879, his presence became a subject of fascination within the Meiji era. This triptych format is characteristic of the period, where kabuki actors were often depicted in roles that mirrored contemporary political figures or historical events.
The composition features three distinct figures in traditional kabuki poses. The central figure, dressed in a striking red robe, commands attention through his posture and expression. To the left and right, the other actors display the exaggerated facial features and dramatic gestures typical of the kabuki stage. The background uses a stylised treatment of nature, with a large pine tree and a red sky, which provides a graphic contrast to the figures in the foreground. The use of bold, flat areas of colour and sharp outlines is consistent with the late Ukiyo-e tradition.
Kunisada III was a prolific artist who maintained the stylistic conventions of the Utagawa school while adapting to the changing tastes of the late nineteenth century. The print serves as a record of how international diplomacy was filtered through the lens of popular Japanese theatre. The inclusion of cartouches containing the names of the actors and their roles provides context for the performance. The work demonstrates the technical skill involved in multi-block printing, with precise registration of the various colour layers. It remains a curious example of how global political figures were integrated into the established visual language of Japanese woodblock prints during a period of rapid modernisation.
