The Lagoon 1 is a plate from the 1947 publication Jazz, a collection of works by Henri Matisse. During his later years, Matisse turned to the technique of paper cut-outs, or decoupage, as his primary method of creation. By cutting shapes from sheets of paper painted with gouache, he achieved a synthesis of drawing and colour.
