An allegorical oil painting by Henry Fuseli depicting the infant Shakespeare caught between the contrasting muses of Tragedy and Comedy.
Henry Fuseli, a Swiss-born painter active in London, produced this allegorical work during the late eighteenth century. The composition depicts the infant William Shakespeare positioned between two female figures, who represent the dual nature of his dramatic output. The figure on the left, draped in dark, sombre tones, embodies Tragedy, while the figure on the right, lighter and more animated, represents Comedy.
Fuseli was known for his interest in the supernatural, the literary, and the psychological. This painting reflects his fascination with the works of Shakespeare, a subject he returned to frequently throughout his career. The figures are arranged in a triangular formation, a common device in neoclassical and romantic compositions to create balance. The lighting is dramatic, with deep shadows obscuring parts of the background, which directs the viewer's attention to the central figures. The infant Shakespeare reaches out, suggesting his future role as a mediator between these two theatrical modes.
Technically, the work demonstrates Fuseli's preference for elongated forms and expressive, somewhat theatrical gestures. The paint application is smooth, allowing for the subtle transitions of light and shadow across the skin tones and drapery. The dark, murky background serves to isolate the figures, creating a sense of mystery. This piece is characteristic of the artist's approach to historical and literary subjects, where he prioritised emotional intensity and symbolic narrative over strict realism. The work remains a clear example of the intersection between literature and visual art in the British Romantic period.
