A 1923 oil painting by Henri Matisse, featuring a model in a cross-legged pose surrounded by decorative patterns and floral elements.
Painted in 1923, The Hindu Pose is a characteristic example of Henri Matisse's Nice period. During this time, the artist frequently utilised the hotel rooms of the French Riviera as studios, filling them with exotic textiles, patterned fabrics, and decorative objects. This work depicts a model seated in a cross-legged position, her arms raised behind her head in a gesture that evokes classical sculpture.
The composition is defined by a tension between the figure and the surrounding environment. The model is positioned against a blue and white chequered fabric, which flattens the pictorial space and creates a decorative backdrop. To the right, a vase containing a cluster of purple flowers introduces a different set of shapes and colours, balancing the symmetry of the central figure. Matisse employs a simplified approach to form, using clear outlines and flat areas of colour to construct the scene. The yellow necklace worn by the model provides a sharp contrast to the blue of the chair, while the soft tones of her skin are rendered with minimal shading.
Matisse's interest in the decorative qualities of painting is evident here. He does not seek to create an illusion of three-dimensional depth, but rather focuses on the arrangement of shapes and patterns across the surface of the canvas. The influence of his earlier work in Fauvism remains visible in his bold use of colour, though the application is more controlled and measured than in his earlier, more aggressive canvases. The painting reflects his ongoing exploration of the relationship between the human figure and the domestic interior, a theme that occupied him for much of his later career. By stripping away unnecessary detail, Matisse directs the viewer's attention to the rhythm of the lines and the harmony of the colour palette.
