A dramatic late Baroque depiction of the martyrdom of Saint John the Baptist, featuring a strong narrative composition and theatrical lighting.
Ubaldo Gandolfi, a prominent figure in the Bolognese school of the eighteenth century, captures a moment of dramatic tension in this depiction of the martyrdom of Saint John the Baptist. The composition organises the figures into a clear narrative sequence, moving from the executioner in the foreground to the kneeling saint and the celestial witnesses above.
The executioner stands with his back to the viewer, his muscular form and poised sword creating a sense of immediate threat. Opposite him, Saint John the Baptist kneels in resignation, his gaze directed away from his impending fate. Gandolfi employs a characteristic palette of muted earth tones, punctuated by the deep red of the saint's garment and the cool blue of the divine figure appearing in the clouds. The lighting is theatrical, typical of the period, casting deep shadows that define the architectural space of the prison while drawing attention to the central figures.
Above the scene, the heavens open to reveal a figure representing God the Father, surrounded by putti and angels who descend to receive the soul of the martyr. This vertical arrangement connects the earthly suffering of the saint with a celestial resolution. Gandolfi demonstrates his technical skill through the fluid handling of paint and the expressive gestures of the participants. The work reflects the stylistic tendencies of the late Italian Baroque, where emotional intensity and clear compositional structure remain paramount. The artist avoids excessive ornamentation, focusing instead on the psychological weight of the event. This piece serves as an example of the narrative clarity and dramatic flair that defined Gandolfi's approach to religious subjects during his career in Bologna.
