This composition depicts the harrowing narrative of the seven sons of Saint Felicitas, who were martyred in Rome during the reign of Emperor Antoninus Pius. Francesco Trevisani, a key figure in the Roman late Baroque, organises the scene with theatrical intensity. The painting is divided between the brutal reality of the execution on the ground and the celestial promise of salvation above.

In the lower register, the figures are arranged in a complex, multi-layered frieze. The executioners are captured in mid-action, their bodies twisted in exertion, while the victims display varying degrees of suffering and resignation. To the right, Saint Felicitas kneels, her posture conveying grief and maternal devotion as she witnesses the death of her children. The architectural backdrop, featuring classical columns and a distant tower, provides a sense of place, grounding the mythological and religious drama in a recognisable, albeit stylised, Roman setting.

Above the chaos, a putto descends from the clouds, holding the palms and crowns of martyrdom. This element introduces a vertical axis that draws the eye upward, contrasting the dark, earth-bound violence with a lighter, ethereal atmosphere. Trevisani employs a palette that balances the sombre tones of the foreground with the luminous blues and whites of the heavens. The lighting is dramatic, typical of the period, casting deep shadows that define the musculature of the figures and heighten the emotional tension of the scene. The work demonstrates the artist's ability to manage large-scale narrative compositions, maintaining clarity despite the density of the figures and the complexity of the action. It remains a representative example of the religious art produced for the Roman ecclesiastical market during the early eighteenth century.
