A refined Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Eishōsai Chōki, depicting the courtesan Kisegawa in a moment of quiet study.
This woodblock print by Eishōsai Chōki depicts the courtesan Kisegawa, a figure associated with the Matsubaya house in the Yoshiwara district. Chōki is recognised for his distinct approach to the bijin-ga genre, which focuses on the portrayal of beautiful women. Unlike the more standardised depictions of his contemporaries, Chōki often employed elongated proportions and a melancholic, introspective quality in his subjects.
Kisegawa is shown seated, engaged with a book, her posture relaxed yet composed. The composition incorporates a secondary element in the upper left, a fan-shaped inset depicting a coastal scene with a boat. This technique, known as a 'picture within a picture', provides a narrative or poetic counterpoint to the main figure. The print features a muted colour palette, relying on soft pinks, greys, and the natural tone of the paper to create a sense of quietude. The kimono is decorated with a subtle pine needle pattern, which echoes the natural motifs found in the inset scene.
Chōki's work often reflects the aesthetic values of the late eighteenth century, where the lives of courtesans were documented with both artistic precision and a degree of stylisation. The inclusion of calligraphy in the upper right corner serves to identify the subject and provide context, a common feature in Ukiyo-e prints of this period. The print demonstrates the technical skill involved in the carving and printing process, where multiple blocks were used to achieve the final image. This piece remains a representative example of Chōki's contribution to the Ukiyo-e tradition, capturing a moment of private reflection within the public sphere of the pleasure quarters.
