A detailed historical genre painting by Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, depicting Saint Jerome instructing Paula on a sun-drenched Roman terrace.
Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, a Dutch painter who settled in Britain, produced this work in 1898. It depicts the historical figure Saint Jerome instructing Paula, a Roman noblewoman, in the tenets of Christianity. The scene is set on a marble terrace overlooking the Mediterranean, a hallmark of the artist's fascination with classical antiquity.
Alma-Tadema was known for his archaeological precision. He spent years studying Roman architecture and artefacts, which allowed him to render the marble surfaces, the pergola draped in vines, and the period-accurate garments with high fidelity. The composition balances the two figures: Paula reclines in a relaxed, luxurious pose, draped in patterned fabrics and a leopard skin, while Jerome sits upright, gesturing as he speaks. The contrast between the secular, material world represented by Paula and the spiritual, ascetic focus of Jerome provides the narrative tension of the piece.
The painting demonstrates the artist's mastery of light and texture. The sunlight filters through the vine leaves, casting soft shadows across the white marble bench. The sea in the background is rendered in deep blues, providing a calm horizon that anchors the figures. Alma-Tadema's work was highly popular during the late Victorian era, appealing to a public that valued both technical skill and the romanticised depiction of ancient life. This print captures the specific tonal qualities of the original oil painting, preserving the delicate balance of the warm, sun-drenched foreground and the cooler tones of the distant water.
