A detailed historical painting by Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema depicting the discovery of Claudius by the Praetorian Guard in 41 AD.
Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, a Dutch painter who settled in England, is known for his meticulous recreations of classical antiquity. This work, completed in 1871, depicts the discovery of Claudius behind a curtain following the assassination of Caligula. The narrative moment captures the Praetorian Guard finding the future emperor, who cowers in fear, while the soldiers gesture in surprise and recognition.
The composition relies on a clear division between the soldiers on the left and the kneeling figure of Claudius on the right. Alma-Tadema employs a precise technique to render the textures of the Roman military attire, from the metallic sheen of the helmets to the heavy folds of the drapery. The architectural setting, featuring marble steps and wall decorations, reflects the artist's interest in archaeological accuracy. His approach to light and shadow creates a sense of depth, drawing the viewer into the interior space of the palace.
Unlike many of his contemporaries who focused on grand, heroic scenes, Alma-Tadema often chose moments of human vulnerability or domestic life within the Roman world. The painting demonstrates his ability to balance historical research with dramatic storytelling. The colour palette is restrained, dominated by earthy tones, muted reds, and cool greys, which allows the focus to remain on the interaction between the figures. The work is a prime example of the Victorian fascination with the classical past, presented with a level of detail that earned the artist significant acclaim during his lifetime. The painting is currently held in the collection of the Walters Art Museum.
