Gustave Courbet painted this view of the Normandy coast during his stay in Etretat in 1869. The work depicts the dramatic chalk cliffs that define this stretch of the English Channel, specifically the Porte d'Aval. Courbet, a central figure in the Realist movement, approached this subject with a focus on the physical presence of the geological formations. He used a palette knife to apply thick layers of paint, which gives the cliff face a tactile, rugged quality that contrasts with the smoother rendering of the sky and sea.
In the foreground, two small fishing boats rest on the shingle beach. Their dark hulls provide a visual anchor against the bright, sunlit stone of the cliffs.
