An early eighteenth-century woodblock print by Torii Kiyonobu I, featuring three kabuki actors in a traditional yakusha-e style.
This woodblock print by Torii Kiyonobu I depicts three kabuki actors: Tamazawa Rinya, Uemura Kohachi, and Ichikawa Monnosuke. As a founder of the Torii school, Kiyonobu I specialised in yakusha-e, or actor prints, which served as promotional material for the kabuki theatres of Edo. The composition reflects the early development of the ukiyo-e genre, where the focus remains on the stylised posture and costume of the performers rather than realistic portraiture.
The print is an example of urushi-e, a technique where hand-applied pigments, often including lacquer or metallic powders, were used to add depth to the ink lines. The figures are arranged in a compact, vertical format, typical of the period. Their garments feature bold geometric patterns, which were a signature element of the Torii school style. The calligraphic lines define the contours of the figures, while the limited palette of ochre, black, and muted red creates a sense of visual unity. The inclusion of the actors' names in the script provides context for the specific theatrical production being advertised.
Kiyonobu I was instrumental in establishing the aesthetic conventions for kabuki imagery. His work captures the energy of the stage through exaggerated poses and expressive facial features. This print offers a glimpse into the visual culture of the Genroku era, a period of significant artistic production in Japan. The paper shows signs of age, consistent with its historical nature as an ephemeral item produced for the theatre-going public. By focusing on the theatricality of the subjects, the artist conveys the drama inherent in the kabuki performance, making this a representative piece of early eighteenth-century Japanese printmaking.
