The work belongs to the early period of Ukiyo-e, specifically the Torii school, which maintained a close association with the kabuki theatre of Edo. The print is an example of urushi-e, or lacquer print, where hand-applied pigments and sometimes glue were used to create a glossy effect, mimicking the appearance of lacquerware.
